Artist: Stephen HerreroThe true nature of the ancient Plains Indians was shaped by his natural religion, by his community and by his wild and primitive surroundings. Like the wild birds and beasts which he studied, like the white clouds and the straight green trees, like the eternal rocks and crystal streams, the Indian was a part of nature. He recognized and trusted in a creative power that was higher than all things, and the daily recognition of the Unseen and Eternal was a part of his daily life. By blowing smoke toward the sky and extending his pipe heavenward he believed his prayers would be carried to the Great Mystery, the eternal source of all life. "Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars Hill and said 'Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are religious. For as I stood by and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To the Unknown God. Whom you ignorantly worship, Him I declare unto you…for in Him we live and move and have our being…for we are also His offspring.'"
